Methodology

Trustee skills are extracted from officer biographies using AI-assisted classification (Claude Haiku). Each officer is scored across 14 skill categories — the 12 standard IoD NZ board competency domains plus two iwi-specific categories: Te Ao Māori (cultural competency, te reo, tikanga, mātauranga Māori) and Community Development (health, housing, education, whānau ora).

Skill levels range from “expert” (10+ years or professional qualification) through “experienced” (5-10 years or senior role), “developing” (some relevant experience), to “awareness” (brief mention only). Only skills with clear biographical evidence are included.

The diversity score combines category breadth (how many of the 14 categories a board covers) with depth (how many categories have 2+ officers at experienced level or above). A score of 100 indicates full coverage with adequate depth across all 14 categories.
